How do I prepare my lawn for aeration, compost, and reseeding?

Here's a guide to help you prepare:

Mow your lawn: A few days before the scheduled service, mow your lawn to a height of 2.5”. This will make it easier for the aerator to penetrate the soil effectively. Avoid mowing the lawn shorter than 2.5” as this can stress the grass and hinder its ability to recover after aeration and seeding.

Remove debris: Clear your lawn of any debris, such as sticks, leaves, decorations, pet debris, and toys, to provide a clean lawn for the service.

Water your lawn: If your soil is dry, water the lawn for 5-7 minutes a day for the two days before the aeration. This will help the aeration equipment pull a deeper plug from your lawn.

Mark sprinkler heads and other obstacles: If you have sprinkler heads or other obstacles on your lawn, mark their locations with flags to avoid any potential damage during the aeration process.

Notify your neighbors: If you have neighbors in close proximity, consider informing them about the upcoming lawn service. This courtesy will give them an opportunity to plan accordingly.

Consider soil testing: If you haven't done so recently, consider getting a soil test done. It will provide valuable information about the soil's pH, nutrient levels, and other essential factors. The results can help Sorensen Outdoor Services tailor their approach to your lawn's specific needs.

Prepare for post-service care: After fall overseeding, it is recommended that you keep the soil and seed moist at all times until germination has occurred. Typically, this means adjusting your irrigation system to water for 5-7 minutes in the morning and 5-7 minutes in the afternoon for 21-30 days. Once the new seed has grown to 2-3”, the watering schedule can be reduced to once per day or once every other day until the temperatures dictate that the system be winterized.

By following these steps and communicating effectively with us, you'll be well-prepared to have your lawn revitalized and looking its best for the upcoming season.
